Q&A from the Bais HaVaad Halacha Hotline

Oil Change

December 18, 2025

Q After Chanukah, how may I dispose of my leftover oil and wicks? And what should I do with a tin menorah that is no longer usable?

The leftover oil from each night may be used on another night (Mishnah Brurah 677:17). But oil that remains after Chanukah, having been used for a mitzvah, may not be used for mundane purposes and should be burned (O.C. ibid. 4); the same applies to the wicks (Tur ibid. and Chayei Adam 154:31).

Burning is called for because Chanukah menorah supplies are treated similarly to those of the menorah in the Bais Hamikdash, which required burning as hekdesh items used for hakravah (R’ Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, cited in Mishnah Achronah on Mishnah Brurah ibid.).

Some hold that if the lights have already burned for the required half hour, the remaining oil is permitted for personal use (Mishnah Brurah ibid. 18). But it is best not to rely on this unless you stipulated beforehand that the excess oil be permitted (ibid.).

The primary reason to burn the leftovers is to ensure that no one uses them for improper purposes, so if burning is not feasible, other respectful means of disposal are acceptable. The wicks may be buried, and the oil poured on the ground in a place with minimal foot traffic. If even this is not possible, the leftovers may be wrapped respectfully and put in the garbage (Mishnah Achronah ibid., citing Rav Elyashiv and R’ Chaim Kanievsky).

Whether the oil and wicks may be repurposed for neiros Shabbos is a matter of debate, so it is better not to do so unless nothing else is available (see discussion in Piskei Teshuvos ibid. 9).

A menorah does not have kedushas mitzvah, as it is only the receptacle for a mitzvah. But because it was closely associated with a mitzvah, it would be a disgrace to discard it disrespectfully, so it is best to wrap it first (Mishnah Achronah ibid., citing Rav Elyashiv).
