Garden of Weedin’

July 24, 2025

Should I refrain from weeding and other gardening activities during the Nine Days?

The Gemara says (Ta’anis 14b, codified in S.A. O.C. 551:2) to refrain during the Nine Days from netiah shel simcha (planting of a joyous nature) like abvarnaki shel melachim (a tree planted for a king to enjoy its shade; alternatively, one planted in honor of a royal birth—Rashi ibid.).

The Rambam (Ta’anis 3:8) explains that any planting that is recreational in nature is prohibited. This includes trees or bushes planted for shade (Me’iri, Ta’anis 14b).

Typical backyard gardens are usually intended for enjoyment, so planting them falls under the prohibition (Kovetz Bais Levi Vol. 13 p. 24). Basic gardening tasks like weeding are permitted (ibid.), but some authorities are stringent about this (Kara Alai Mo’ed 3 fn. 3 citing Rav Elyashiv). Mowing the lawn is permitted, as this task does not bring joy (Rivevos Ephraim 1:374).

A hired landscaper may do netiah shel simcha for a non-Jewish client (Piskei Teshuvos 551:9).
